Antihistamine treatment

How do antihistamine treatments work?
Antihistamines are an effective treatment available for the symptoms of an allergic reaction. During an allergic reaction, histamine is released. Histamine particles bind with histamine receptors, which directly cause allergic symptoms and initiates allergic inflammation. Antihistamine treatment interrupts the binding of histamine particles to receptors. In effect, the antihistamine treatment gets in the way! As such, antihistamine treatment helps to reduce the impact of an allergic reaction. Older antihistamine treatments may impact upon histamine in the brain so tiredness can be a side effect. Newer antihistamine treatments are generally accepted as not having or minimising this side effect.
