Dust mite allergy

What is dust mite allergy?
Dust mite allergy is a hypersensitive reaction to proteins in the faeces of dust mites. The faeces of dust mites contain a number of protein substances that cause dust mite allergy. When these are inhaled or touch the skin, the body produces antibodies. These antibodies cause the release of a mediator called histamine that leads to swelling and irritation of the upper respiratory passages. The predisposition for dust mite allergy is often hereditary - meaning that dust mite allergy often runs in families.

Dust mites are present all year round and therefore cause ongoing dust mite allergy. The faeces from the mites, which is the dust mite allergen, dries out and can be released into the air when someone walks over a rug, sits down in a chair, or shakes
